IMSA: Rolex24 – Just a Six-Hour Race to the Finish!

0 0

There is quite a battle going on in Daytona and this war is far from won.  The pendulum in many of the categories is far from settled and on an hourly basis is swinging to and fro.  It would be well worth your time to plan to tune in for the final couple (or more hours) but currently we have a six hour race still to run.

DPi – Alexander Rossi #10 Acura of Wayne Taylor Racing currently leads the way on 600 laps just 8-seconds ahead of the #01 Cadillac of Chip Ganassi Racing with Kevin Magnussen at the wheel.  The clash of Formula 1 refugees is in full flight but its just as close behind and really this overall victory could be fought for by any one of the five cars on the lead lap, especially if FCYs keep pulling them back together.

LMP2 – Dawn not only saw the rise of the sun but also the #8 Tower Motorsport Oreca 07 to the fore of the LMP2 category and they have continued to challenge the #18 of Era Motorsport the gap flexing between 3-5 seconds. The LMP2s are 15+ laps off the DPi pace so the overall victory is clearly no longer a consideration, but the struggle between the leading three in category is still very real.

LMP3 – Is led by the #74 Ligier P320 of Riley Motorsports and whilst they are 3 laps clear of the second placed car #33 of Sean Creech Motorsport that is just 5mins elapsed and any extended service will be costly… Special mention to third placed #6 Muehlner Motorsport who 5 laps adrift from the leader, but have displayed that fighting, never say die spirit in this race which will hopefully be rewarded with a finish and hopefully a podium.  Some sage voices in endurance motorsport doubted the longevity of the LMP3 cars predicting no finishers in the category… well a portion of humble pie is in the warming tray!

GTLM – The #4 Corvette continues to lead here, but that does not tell the whole story.  The Corvettes appear to have run something of an economy run having completed 20 pit stops, whilst their competition has completed a minimum of 22 stops..  And the nine full course yellows have kept everyone (bar the #79 RSR) very much in the mix.  This would appear to be a tale of who has back-timed their run from here to the finish line best… Keep a keen eye on it, those Europeans could snatch it away from Detroit yet!

GTD – The lead has switched to the #21 AF Corse Ferrari in the hands of Daniel Serra… but by just 2.5 seconds from the ever present at the fore of the field #57 Winward Racing Mercedes AMG in the hands of Maro Engel.  They have put on a stirling display and that looks set to continue to the flag. In third we continue to have the variety pack of the #1 Lamborghini of Paul Miller Racing and #9 Porsche 911 GT3.R of Pfaff Motorsport.. Still pleny to play out here…
