0 0

G-Drive’s 16 year old wunderkind, Argentine racer Franco Colapinto, has scored a double pole position in Dubai for the Russian backed team, run by Algarve Pro Racing.

The qualifying, for the back to back first two races of the four-race 2021 series, started with the Dubai Autodrome in foggy conditions and unlike the more familiar formats, only a single qualifying session was to be run with the fastest laps of the session being used for race one and the second fastest lap setting grid positions for race two.

Impressive lap times from Colapinto in the #25 Aurus 01, along with similar times by team-mate Yifei Ye in the #26 sister car saw G-Drive lock out the front row for both races; both drivers were the only ones to set two laps in the 1:43’s Colapinto’s 1:43.616 being good enough to take race 1 pole.

In the LMP2-Am category, Daytona 24 winners ERA Motorsport took the category’s pole with Kyle Tilley in the #18 Oreca.

United Autosport were the class of the field in LMP3 qualifying. With Wayne Boyd and Duncan Tappy swapping positions for pole in both races with honours ultimately falling to Wayne Boyd and the #23 car which set a 1:51.418, 7 thousandths of a second ahead of teammate Tappy.

In the the 19-car GT category, Porsche cars will occupy the top-three grid spots for both races with Precote Herberth Motorsport taking pole courtesy of Robert Renauer’s 1:55.552 and 1:56.015 flyers behind the wheel of the #99 Porsche 911 GT3 R. Julien Andlauer set the second-best times for GPX Racing and Renauer’s Herberth teammate Klaus Bachler came through in third for both races.

Charlie Eastwood was the quickest non-Porsche driver in TF Sport’s No. 95 Aston Martin Vantage GT3.
