The European Le Mans Series moves to Italy this weekend to the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo E Dino Ferrari at Imola for the second round of the 2016 Series.

42 competitors took to the track for the first 90-minute Free Practice on Friday which was interrupted by two Full Course Yellows and then was Red Flagged with just over two minutes showing on the clock when the #48 Murphy Prototypes Oreca-Nissan went off at Turn 15 (Variante Alta) and came to rest in a potentially dangerous position.

The #23 Panis Barthez Competition Ligier-Nissan topped the timing screens with former ELMS champion Paul Loup Chatin posting a 1m34.435 lap, faster than last year’s pole time of 1m34.496.

Chatin finished the session 0.805s ahead of the #33 Eurasia Motorsport Oreca-Nissan of Tristan Gommendy, with the #46 Thiriet by TDS Racing Oreca third quickest, 1.1s behind the fastest car and 0.3s ahead of the Murphy Prototypes Oreca.

Silverstone race winners G-Drive Racing were sixth fastest with Giedo Van Der Garde settinga 1m36.032 lap, just 0.1 behind reigning champion Bjorn Wirdheim in the no40 Krohn Racing Ligier in fifth overall.

In LMP3 the Euro International #11 topped the times setting a 1:40.099 +0.069s from the #2 United Autosports Ligier of Brundle, Guasch and England. The #19 Duqueine Engineering car rounded out the top three.

In LM GTE, the #66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari 458 Italia continued to show its pace setting the session’s fastest time of 1:42.262 1. Formula racing’s jet-black 458 clocked in a mere 0.316s behind with the Porsche 911 RSR 991 of Proton Racing closing out the top three.
