Porsche’s Brendon Hartley topped the timesheets at the end of Free Practice 2 in Mexico. The Kiwi driver led home teammate Nick Tandy by just under half a second in another Porsche 1-2 in a session which saw both Toyotas struggling for pace.
Every Porsche driver set faster times than any of the Toyota pilots with the best time of 1:26.681 for the Japanese marque set by Jose Maria Lopez to put his #7 TS050 into third fastest spot for the session, 1.190s off the pace of the slowest Porsche.
Early in the session Oliver Jarvis put the #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca 07 Gibson to the top of the LMP2 sheets but it was Ho-Pin Tung who set a time of 1:33.390 who took the honours for the fastest time at the end of the session. Alex Lynn took second for the #26 G-Drive Racing Oreca 07 while Bruno Senna was again the fastest driver in the #31 Vaillante Rebellion with is time of 1:33.804 8 putting him third fastest in the session.
In GTE Pro, Aston Martin’s Marco Sorenson set the pace in the #97 Vantage followed by fellow Dane Nicki Thiim in the #95. James Caldo was again the fastest driver in a Ferrari setting a 1:40.312 to put the #51 AF Corse car into third spot for the session.
In AM, Porsche’s Italian protege Matteo Cairoli took his Dempsey Proton Racing 911 RSR to the top of the class times with a 1:41.536 with the #98 Vantage snapping at his heels 0.367 off the pace. Ben Barker took his #86 Gulf Racing UK 911 to third with a time of 1:41.979. Again, the current AM-class leaders Clearwater Racing appeared off the pace closing out the session at the bottom of the timesheets.
Free Practice 3 is set for 13:45 local time, followed by qualifying later this evening.
