2019 Michelin Le Mans Cup champion Laurents Hörr has been announced to replace Silver-rated Gentleman Driver David Heinemeier Hansson in the #56 Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR for the remainder of the FIA WEC season starting with this weekend’s race at Circuit of The Americas.
The initial announcement was made by Project 1 team principal Axel Funke saying: “It was a long decision-making process involving all the important heads of the team as well as Egidio. In the end, the question was: How can we improve the performance and contest the rest of the season without changing drivers again,”
“We thank David for his work with the team.” added team manager Marcel Jürgens-Wichmann. “We have worked on a constructive basis. The whole team wishes David all the best for his future in motorsport as well as in his private life. He will always remain part of the Project 1 family,”
Speaking later on Twitter, Heinemeier Hansson confirmed that he had stood down from the drive due to his feeling that the GTE-Am class had moved away from its principals of two Gentlemen Drivers and one professional.
“I decided to withdraw from the 56 after it became clear that a car with two amateurs and one pro, as the spirit of the GTE-Am class was intended, is no longer a viable or competitive option”. “Egidio and I were the only such pairing in an 11-car field, and it sucked
“It simply made no sense to continue when you had three factory drivers racing as Silvers, half the field qualifying their Silvers, and the entire field, minus us, using professional/career drivers as Silvers. Why waste our time and money competing on such a profoundly unfair field?
“Egidio and Matteo are awesome, fast drivers for their ratings. But as the lone gentleman driver with a Silver ranking, I was the anchor on that boat. And who the hell wants to be the anchor? So while it’s a sad note to end on, I’m happy to set those guys free to chase wins.”
Speaking of his appointment Hörr said: “Of course, I am very happy. For me, entering the world championship is an important and right step. I am aware of the responsibility: Team Project 1 is currently defending the title. Nevertheless, I will be concentrating on myself and my learning curve. I know that I have to learn a lot in the short term, but I feel completely up to the task”.
