Brendon Hartley, in the leading Porsche 919 Hybrid, had a huge accident when attempting a misjudged overtaking manouvre on the outside of Michael Wainwright in the #86 Gulf Racing Porsche 911 RSR. The resulting carnage brought out the first Full Course Yellow of the race.
Hartley, who had led for the whole of his stint collided with Wainwright in a misjudged overtaking manouvre at The Loop with the Hybrid prototype close to flipping and both cars ended up in the gravel trap.
Both of the drivers exited the cars unaided and left the track safely.
As the scene unfolded Brazilian Lucas di Grassi’s Audi R18 stopped in the middle of the track with what looked like a total electrical failure and was unable to continue.
As the Audi technicians arrived at the stricken car, smoke started to pour from the vehicle. Di Grassi leapt, unaided, from the car as the support technicians arrived.
