Saturday at Silverstone dawned cold and overcast and with a strong north wind, spectators and competitors alike were feeling the chill. First out on track this morning were the WEC cars for Free Practice 3.
Under the cold conditions, set to remain for qualifying, times tumbled as Porsche again showed their promise for the season by taking the top two times; 1:24.837 for Mark Webber in the #20 919 Hybrid and, 1/10th of a second behind him was Roman Dumas in the sister #14 car.
The #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro took 3rd with a 1:43.267 with its sister #2 R18 following for 4th setting a 1:43.725. The two Toyota TS040 Hybrids took 5th (#8) and 6th (#7) although a technical issue with the #8 car denied local driver Anthony Davidson any time in the car this morning.
The privateer LMP1 team of Rebellion Racing had mixed luck this morning with the #12 Lola Toyota of Mathias Beche stopping on track after only 5 minutes and being unable to take any further part in the practice session. In contrast the #13 in the hands of Fabio Leimer lapped at 1:44.169 which was only 0.172s behind the #7 Toyota.
In the GTE class, top two spots went to the #51 and 81 AF Corse cars respectively, the #91 Porsche RSR taking third. Local team Aston Martin Racing again suffered speed issues with their two highest placed cars being the #97 and #99 in 9th & 10th in class respectively.
In an attempt to capture the ‘chilly’ mood here today, you may have noticed all the pics have turned into ‘Arty B&W’ …. Enjoy!
