David Reynolds held off Jamie Whincup to claim victory in a dramatic second race at Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Reynolds who started from pole dropped to second when Craig Lowndes got the jump off the line.

Lowndes, who broke the track record during the race, was leading by just over a second when his rear left tire failed at 250KPH on the start finish straight. The tire blow-out left the Red Bull Racing Holden heading straight for the wall meaning Lowndes was out on the spot.

The incident, which meant the safety car was called into action for the second race running, left Reynolds leading form Whincup.

When racing resumed on lap 16 Reynolds was under pressure from race one winner Whincup. At one point the 2014 champion got down the inside of Reynolds but the Ford driver had the inside line for the next corner and retook the lead.

Reynolds never looked back, going on to take his second victory of the season and move above Lowndes into second in the championship.

Whincup was able to bring this Holden home for his second podium of the day ahead of Scott McLaughlin who claimed his first podium finish of the season.

Championship leader Mark Winterbottom came home in forth ahead of Shan van Gisbergen who rose from 13th on the grid to round out the top five.

James Courtney was the highest factory Holden driver in sixth ahead of Tim Slade and Scott Pye.

Fabian Coulthard recovered from a difficult first race, where he finished last, to come home in ninth ahead of Garth Tander.

The ITM 500 Auckland weekend continues tomorrow with the 200KM race.
